how to wear neutrals: inspired by Rachel Zoe

If you follow my tumblr, then it's no secret to you that I am mildly obsessed with Rachel Zoe. Ok, not mildly...I'm full-on obsessed. I've been watching her show The Rachel Zoe Project since season 1 (um, can they PLEASE come back with another season?!), and constantly flip through her book Style From A to Zoe for inspiration and advice. Needless to say, she is my #1 fashion inspiration.
Something I picked up on during her 4 seasons of TRZP is how well (and often) she wears neutral colors.
I've always heard "if you're going to wear all black or all white, add a pop of color somewhere," and in a lot of cases, yes, that's true (see photo 4). You probably should. But not always- and Rach (um can we pretend she and I are on a nickname basis?) demonstrates that well.
Sometimes, all you need is another neutral. In photos 2, 5, & 6, she adds a white or grey piece to offset the otherwise all-black pieces. In photo 1 she adds a black belt & bag to give a little contrast to her all-white (and stunning) dress. In photo 3, the only thing off-setting her completely black ensemble is a few diamonds around her neck- and it's still a perfect look. I think it's safe to say that it's really hard to go wrong with all-black. In photo 4, she adds a pop of color to her black on black on black outfit with her green Celine bag and colorful scarf.
Basically, RZ can do no wrong. I trust her fashion taste in every way possible.
Sidenote: who else is D-Y-I-N-G over her dress in the bottom middle photo? Ughhhhh. Perfect.

Hope everyone's New Year has gotten off to a good start!

  1. Great post! I love the way she does big neutrals. Big patterns, all over black and white. Love her style.
